About BOTOX® Cosmetic
Facial muscles are attached to the overlying skin, so the skin bunches together every time muscles contract. This movement forms lines in the skin over time, most commonly above the eyebrows, across the forehead and at the outer corners of the eyes. When injected directly into the muscles, BOTOX® blocks the nerve signals telling the facial muscles to contract into expressions like smiling or frowning. As a result, the treated muscles are weakened or paralyzed, which allows both muscles and skin to settle into a smooth, unlined appearance.
BOTOX® is commonly used to treat visible signs of aging, but an increasing number of men and women are looking into BOTOX® as a preventative treatment to help limit the formation of those dynamic wrinkles in the first place. What to Expect
During your consultation, Dr. Koehler will ask you about your appearance concerns and explain the target areas that he feels will be most effective in meeting your goals. He’ll also explain what you can expect during your treatment and talk about the results you’re likely to see.
Because BOTOX® is completely nonsurgical, patients can enjoy treatment as a very brief outpatient procedure that can even be completed over a lunch break. Additionally, since there’s no downtime afterwards, your appointment can be scheduled at a time that’s convenient for you without concerns over having to take time off work or away from your daily routine.
At your appointment time, Dr. Koehler will ask you to make several facial expressions, which allows him to examine your facial muscles in order to determine where to place the BOTOX® injections for the best results. Next, the product is injected into the targeted areas. Dr. Koehler uses several techniques so that you feel little to no discomfort during this procedure.
After your session, you can simply return to life as normal, making sure to keep your head upright for the first 4 hours following your appointment. Rarely, you may notice a bit of blood at the injection site, and some patients experience minor swelling or bruising. However, these side effects are very rare when BOTOX® is administered by an experienced injector.
Risks and Complications
BOTOX® Cosmetic is considered a very low-risk procedure, especially when injections are performed by a cosmetic surgeon with a great deal of technical expertise. It’s possible, although rare, for some patients to have an unanticipated response to BOTOX® such as droopy eyelids, headaches or other negative reactions. Your New Look
You should see the results of your BOTOX® treatment within a few days to a week. Does BOTOX hurt?
Most people report that BOTOX is a fairly comfortable procedure, as the needles are very small. Topical numbing creams can be applied to the treatment area prior to BOTOX injections to maximize your comfort. Immediately after getting BOTOX, you may experience some tenderness, swelling and bruising, but these side effects typically wear away on their own fairly quickly.

How far in advance should I get BOTOX before an event?
Schedule your BOTOX appointment at least two weeks before an important event. It can take around two weeks for swelling and bruising to fully diminish, and it may take some time for BOTOX to settle into place so you can see your final results.

How long does BOTOX last?
BOTOX usually lasts for 3 to 6 months, although this can vary based on how quickly your body metabolizes the product, your lifestyle habits and other factors. To help prolong your BOTOX results, follow your provider’s aftercare instructions as closely as possible, which may include not vigorously rubbing the treated area and avoiding strenuous exercise for at least 24 hours after your appointment.

Will I need to take off work after getting BOTOX?
No, you should be able to get back to work and other daily activities directly after your BOTOX appointment. However, Dr. Koehler recommends avoiding strenuous exercise for the first day or so after getting BOTOX to ensure optimal results. Swelling, bruising and tenderness should begin to diminish over the next several days following injections.
